GroupsThe Benalla Sustainable Future Group has a number of aspirational and action groups advocating for changes which promote Environmental Sustainability.
Below are Action Groups that have existed since BSFG was incorporated in 2010. During April 2022 a Review of BSFG was facilitated by Cath Botta which considered new opportunities and risks facing the group. These workshops were well attended bringing new people to the group with very good attendance by younger people from our community. Five new interest group were initiated which now require further work to determine goals and action plans. These groups can be viewed here and contributions made, or even join a group you would like to contribute to. Building Encouraging others to consider issues relating to sustainable housing design and retrofitting for energy efficiency is a great interest of a core group of our members who have initiated and played an active role in forums promoting sustainable housing. These members also participate in BSFG's Renewable Energy Benalla action group and other groups promoting sustainable building practices. Education Developing opportunities to educate others about sustainability is central to BSFG activities, with regular guest speakers, festival events and forums featuring on the BSFG calendar. BSFG members also engage in a diverse range of sustainability related educational activities in the community, including involvement with Swanpool Cinema and Gecko Clan in developing the annual Swanpool Environmental Film Festival. Energy BSFG has a long term interest in exploring renewable energy options for Benalla. Renewable Energy Benalla (REB), an action group of U3A,emerged from a forum 'Benalla's Renewable Energy Future' in October 2016. REB is actively engaged in 'kickstarting Benalla's journey to zero carbon emissions', REB has its own website - https://reb.org.au Food - Living in a rural area, land care; agriculture and forestry management; biodiversity; soils; water and farming practices across the spectrum from organic to conventional are also of great interest to BSFG members. Food sustainability and security is focus of the Benalla Food Cooperative which enables members to buy mainly Australian produced non-perishable foods without packaging. Benalla Local Food Network is a new BSFG action group which local food growers, retailers, organisations and community members come together to supply the town with healthy food. Lobbying/Media - an informal group of letter writers, advocates and lobbyists and a subcommittee working to develop and maintain the BSFG newsletter and website and disseminate ideas and resources about sustainability through Twitter and Facebook. Transport - Cycling: There are health, environmental, economic and social benefits of cycling. The Bicycle Action Group considers planning networks, improving cyclists’ safety and encouraging cycling participation. The ultimate goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of Benalla and thus finding ways to overcome any barriers that prevent cycling. Electric Vehicles and Public Transport clearly provide scope for future work in this new category. Plastics - Plastic Wise Benalla - This group works with local businesses and Council to reduce the use of single use plastic. Plastic Wise Benalla met fortnightly in 2018 to produce fabric shopping bags which are sold in local community outlets and at BSFG stalls at local festivals, markets and events. . |
